She’s Got Eyes of the Bluest Skies…

20 Jul

Tomorrow, Ella Kate turns 4.

Most of me can’t remember what it felt like before she was born.  Sure, I can remember what we DID before she was born.  It’s just difficult to remember how I FELT before she was born.  Since the minute we met, I’ve been head over heels in love with her, and I can’t remember NOT loving her.

Ella has grown up so much in the past year.  She has gone from being a toddler to being a full blown preschooler.  She’s a “kid”, in her words.  I know she is still little, but sometimes she acts like a teenager.  I’m grateful when those moments pass and she asks to snuggle again.  But I know, as each birthday comes and goes, that she will get more independent, more capable.  I love watching her grow up and learn new things, make new friends, become a person of her own.

This past year has brought an overload of princesses, ponies, unicorns, Strawberry Shortcake, Angelina Ballerina, fairies, swinging, learning to write her name, drawing recognizable figures, becoming an amazing big sister, loving school, making new friends and dancing & singing.  This summer has brought out a new love for swimming, Fancy Nancy & doing everything herself.  She is a girl, through and through.

Ella has had a few moments of craziness this year; a few cringe-worthy, scream-fest tantrums that have left us both embarrassed and exhausted.  But on the whole, she has shown this year that she has a truly kind heart.  While Audrey was in the hospital twice (three times if you count her birth!), Ella was nothing but patient, kind, loving and sweet.  She would often bring in her stethoscope to help the doctors make Audrey better.  When a new friend joined Ella’s class in January, she was quick to ask him to play & try to comfort him when he was sad.  Generally, she is a very encouraging girl.  She gets as excited for Audrey to do new things as we do. She is very stubborn and probably a little bit spoiled, but she is also a good friend and a great sharer.

I am so proud to be Ella Kate’s mommy.  I feel lucky to have her as a daughter.

Happy birthday, my little Ella Kate Monkey.

Time for a little clean up…

7 Jul

As usual, the first half of the year sneaked past me.  It’s July already and, pardon my French, but so far, much of 2011 has been a bitch.  At this point, I say BRING IT ON, 2011!  What has not yet killed me has definitely made me stronger, at least enough stronger to realize that sometimes “stronger” just means “keep going until it’s over”.  It is almost comical at times how much crazy, sad, & freakishly coincidental stuff has happened to us this year.

But I digress.

I’m going to take the next 6 months of the year and tackle something that has been slowly driving me into upheaval since we added another person to our family and house (and maybe since my “nesting” instinct has peaced out).  Organizing.  That’s right, I’m going to take the second half of the year and really, thoroughly ORGANIZE the crap out of my house.  We’ve accumulated lots of stuff.  Some of it we need, even though we don’t use it often.  Some of it we really don’t need and it will go.  Some of it we may need in the future (if there are possibly any more baby Morleys…yet to be determined) but right now it’s just taking up a lot of space in our not very spacious abode.

So I’ve been scouring google & pinterest for organizing ideas.  Oh, to have the organizing equipment that some of the photos have!  (Yeah, yeah…the space too.  It does help to have lots of space to store & organize your stuff to make it look really neat).  I’ve decided to take it one very small project at a time so that I don’t feel overwhelmed but I can still feel accomplished.  I’m going to take a week or two to organize one cabinet, one drawer or shelf, one closet at a time and hopefully in the end, my house will magically seem bigger!  Hey, a girl can dream, right?

So, let me have it!  What are your biggest organization tips?  What are your biggest organization pet peeves?  The worst clutter culprit in our house, other than toys, is mail!  It just piles up.  Bills (even though almost all are paid online), credit card statements, ads…they seem to find a way to make piles all over our house!  I’m hoping to find a way to nip this & finally have a mail-clutter-free zone!

Oh, and let’s take a few seconds to hope that 2012 is a bit more forgiving than 2011 has been.
